Your USD balance can earn yield while remaining available as trading collateral on Backpack. With Auto Lend enabled, available USD is lent automatically, so you can earn on your collateral without moving it into a separate earn account.
This guide explains where USD yield comes from, how it works alongside trading, and how eligible users can earn an additional VIP boost through BP staking, asset balances, or trading activity
How USD Yield Works
The USD lending panel shows your Combined APY, with a breakdown of Lending APY, Stablecoin APY, and VIP Boost APY. The base yield comes from two components:
- Lending APY: The annualized rate earned from lending USD to borrowers.
- Stablecoin APY: Additional yield from Backpack’s internal stablecoin pool.
You can view your APY breakdown on Backpack’s Lend page.

Combined APY = Lending APY + Stablecoin APY + applicable VIP Boost APY.
For accounts without VIP status, VIP Boost APY is +0.00%, so Combined APY consists of the two base components.
For VIP accounts, the extra boost applies only to lent USD within the tier’s Balance Cap; amounts above the cap earn the base yield.
How to Start Earning on USD
- Fund your Backpack account. Deposit USD or USDC using an available deposit method.
- Enable Auto Lend. Turn it on for the account or subaccount holding your USD.
- Review your lending balance and rates. Available USD is lent automatically, and lending interest is added to your balance and compounded.

You can also lend manually through the Lend page by selecting USD, entering an amount, and confirming.

Auto Lend handles available balances automatically as funds enter your account.
You do not need VIP status to earn the base USD yield. For example, the Lend screenshot shows 1.07% Lending APY + 2.58% Stablecoin APY + 0.00% VIP Boost APY = 3.65% Combined APY for a non-VIP account.
Use Your USD as Collateral While It Earns
Lent USD remains eligible as collateral for trading and margin. You can therefore maintain a lent USD balance while using it to support trading positions.
For spot purchases, Backpack can automatically redeem lends to cover the trade. Once USD is spent to buy another asset, that amount is no longer part of your lent USD balance.
There is no fixed lending term, but access to funds still depends on lending liquidity and your account’s margin requirements. High pool utilization can restrict redemptions. See how lending and redemption work.
Earn Additional USD Yield With VIP
Your VIP Boost APY adds extra yield to eligible lent USD. The interface calls the maximum lent USD receiving this boost the Balance Cap.
The portion above your tier’s limit earns the base USD yield without the VIP boost. The boost applies to lent USD, not every asset you hold.
Stablecoin yield and VIP extra yield are paid monthly. Check the VIP page for the current boost schedule.
Three Ways to Access the USD Yield Boost
Backpack uses whichever qualification path gives you the highest VIP tier:
- Stake BP. VIP 1 starts at 50,000 BP staked. Higher staking amounts qualify for higher tiers.
- Hold assets. VIP 1 starts at $250,000 in qualifying asset balances. You do not need to trade or stake BP to qualify through this path.
- Trade. VIP 1 starts at $15 million in spot volume or $50 million in futures volume over a rolling 30-day period.
Asset Balance qualification adds the balances across your main account and subaccounts, subtracts borrows, and excludes unrealized PnL on open futures positions.
Your qualifying asset balance determines your tier. Your lent USD balance determines how much USD can receive yield, subject to the tier’s boost limit. These are different amounts.
See the full qualification thresholds to compare paths.
Example: Qualifying Balance vs. Boosted Balance
Suppose you qualify for VIP 1 through the Asset Balance path with $250,000 in qualifying assets. Of that amount, $100,000 is lent USD.
Using the illustrative base APY of 3.65% shown in the Lend screenshot, your yield would be split as follows:
Holding $250,000 gets you to VIP 1, but it does not make the entire $250,000 eligible for the USD boost. Only your lent USD qualifies, and the VIP 1 boost stops at $50,000.
The same Balance Cap applies when you qualify through BP staking or trading.
Start With Your USD Balance
Fund your account, enable Auto Lend, and check your USD lending balance. If you qualify for VIP through BP staking, asset balances, or trading, review your tier’s boost and limit to understand which portion of your lent USD receives extra yield.
