Take-Two Interactive (Nasdaq: TTWO) is the video game company behind Rockstar Games, 2K, and Zynga. Learn how it makes money and what GTA VI means for the business.

What is Take-Two Interactive (TTWO)?

Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. (Nasdaq: TTWO) is an American video game holding company headquartered in New York City. Founded in 1993, the company develops, publishes, and markets interactive entertainment across console, PC, and mobile platforms through three principal labels: Rockstar Games, 2K, and Zynga. Take-Two is best known as the parent company of Rockstar Games, the studio behind Grand Theft Auto, one of the best-selling entertainment franchises of all time.

What does Take-Two Interactive do?

Take-Two develops, publishes, and markets video games through three wholly owned labels: Rockstar Games, 2K, and Zynga. Each label operates its own studios, while Take-Two provides funding, distribution, and corporate infrastructure as the parent company.

Rockstar Games develops and publishes Grand Theft Auto, Red Dead Redemption, and Max Payne. The Grand Theft Auto series has sold 465 million units to date, including 225 million copies of Grand Theft Auto V, according to Take-Two's fiscal 2026 annual report. Rockstar joined Take-Two in 1998, when the company acquired BMG Interactive and the rights to Grand Theft Auto along with it.

2K publishes some of the most recognizable franchises in sports and strategy gaming, including NBA 2K, WWE 2K, Borderlands, BioShock, Civilization, and Mafia. Take-Two launched the 2K label in 2005. NBA 2K in particular has become a year-round live-service business rather than a one-time annual release.

Zynga is Take-Two's mobile and free-to-play arm, acquired in 2022 for approximately $12.7 billion, the largest acquisition in the company's history. Its portfolio includes Toon Blast, Match Factory!, Empires & Puzzles, and Words With Friends. The deal transformed Take-Two from a console-first publisher into a diversified company with a major mobile footprint.

How Take-Two makes money

Take-Two's revenue comes from three main streams.

Premium game sales. Full-priced releases on console and PC, such as new Grand Theft Auto, Red Dead Redemption, or Borderlands titles. These launches are infrequent but generate enormous upfront revenue.

Recurrent consumer spending. In-game purchases, virtual currency, add-on content, and live services such as Grand Theft Auto Online and NBA 2K's online modes. This is now the core of the business: recurrent consumer spending accounted for 78% of Take-Two's net bookings in fiscal 2026.

Mobile. Zynga's free-to-play titles monetize through in-app purchases and advertising, providing a steady revenue base between major console releases.

One note on reading Take-Two's numbers: the company's fiscal year ends on March 31. Fiscal 2026, for example, covers April 2025 through March 2026. Take-Two also reports "net bookings," a measure of the value of products and services sold in a period, alongside GAAP revenue.

Recent financial performance

Fiscal 2026 was a record year for Take-Two. The company reported net bookings of $6.72 billion, up 19% from the prior year, with recurrent consumer spending growing 17% and accounting for 78% of net bookings.

For fiscal 2027, Take-Two has guided to net bookings of $8.0 to $8.2 billion, growth of roughly 20% year over year, driven primarily by the launch of Grand Theft Auto VI. The company also expects to generate more than $1 billion in operating cash flow during the year.

GTA VI and the road ahead

Grand Theft Auto VI, developed by Rockstar Games, launches on November 19, 2026. It is arguably the most anticipated entertainment release of all time, and pre-orders opened on June 25, 2026. Take-Two's management has described fiscal 2027 as a breakout year that will establish a new financial baseline for the business, with GTA VI expected to drive both a large upfront sales wave and years of recurring revenue through its online component, following the pattern set by Grand Theft Auto V and GTA Online.

Beyond GTA VI, Take-Two has described its current development pipeline as the most ambitious in company history, spanning premium console titles, annual sports franchises, and mobile.

A brief history of Take-Two

Take-Two was founded in September 1993 by Ryan Brant in New York. The 1998 acquisition of BMG Interactive brought Grand Theft Auto into the portfolio and led to the formation of Rockstar Games. The company launched 2K in 2005, and Grand Theft Auto V, released in 2013, went on to become one of the best-selling games ever made. The 2022 Zynga acquisition completed Take-Two's expansion across console, PC, and mobile. Today, Take-Two is one of the largest independent video game publishers in the world, led by Chairman and CEO Strauss Zelnick.
