About Zcash
Zcash is a proof-of-work blockchain launched in 2016 and derived from Bitcoin's codebase. It uses zk-SNARKs (zero-knowledge proofs) to enable shielded transactions — where the sender, recipient, and amount are encrypted but still cryptographically verifiable. Users can choose between transparent transactions (publicly visible, similar to Bitcoin) or shielded transactions, giving Zcash a compliance-flexible privacy model. ZEC has a fixed supply of 21 million coins and follows a halving schedule similar to Bitcoin.
