Why Crypto Wallets Are Broken | Armani Ferrante x Blockworks

Join our CEO, Armani Ferrante and Lightspeed for a conversation touching on the finer points of CEX vs. DEX and current state of crypto wallets. Hosted by Mert Mumtaz and Jack Kubinec, Lightspeed is for projects building products that solve real problems - uniquely enabled by crypto.

Here's a quick synopsis:

The debate over centralized vs. decentralized exchanges is framed all wrong. It’s not about centralization—it’s about compliance vs. censorship resistance. At a technical level, well-built CEXs and DEXs aren’t that different. But a truly decentralized exchange is so distributed that no one can shut it down. CEXs, on the other hand, have clear control points, making them subject to regulations—whether they like it or not. DEXs are killing it in spot trading, but when it comes to margin and perps, it gets tricky. Who runs the liquidators? How do you manage risk? These are the hard problems no one talks about.

And let’s be real—crypto wallets are broken. Every year, people lose billions because they forget their keys. That’s insane. We’re building Backpack Wallet to fix this, making self-custody as seamless as a CEX account, but without sacrificing security. Multi-sig, account recovery, no nonsense. The future isn’t just CEX or DEX—it’s building usable, resilient systems that actually solve real problems.
