Backpack Securities Trading Hours & Fees

One of the biggest advantages of Backpack Securities is 24/5 accessibility. Backpack stocks trading hours span four U.S. market sessions running nearly around the clock on weekdays and there are no commissions or platform fees.

Trading hours

All times in this section are U.S. Eastern Time (ET). Trading runs continuously from Sunday 8:00pm ET through Friday 8:00pm ET, paused on weekends and U.S. market holidays.

The sessions

Session Eastern Time Days What you can trade
Overnight 8:00pm – 4:00am Sun night → Fri morning Whole shares only
Pre-market 4:00am – 9:30am Mon – Fri Whole shares only
Regular hours 9:30am – 4:00pm Mon – Fri Whole and fractional shares
After-hours 4:00pm – 8:00pm Mon – Fri Whole shares only
Closed Fri 8:00pm → Sun 8:00pm, and U.S. market holidays No trading

Reading the market status indicator

Every Backpack Securities page shows a market status indicator  a small colored dot with a label that tells you which session is live. When a session is active, the dot pulses. Hover over it for a tooltip showing each session's range, with Eastern Time hours automatically converted to your local timezone. When the market is closed, it also shows a countdown until the next session.

Whole vs. fractional shares

Fractional shares are available only during regular hours (9:30am–4:00pm ET, Monday–Friday). At all other times overnight, pre-market, and after-hours you can trade whole shares only, with a one-share minimum per order.

If you enter a fractional quantity outside regular hours, the order form will prompt you to round to a whole number or wait for regular hours to reopen. Quotes may be wider outside regular U.S. market hours because there is usually less liquidity overnight, pre-market, and after-hours. This is market behavior, not a separate Backpack commission or platform fee.

Funding & fees

Stock and ETF trades use the same Backpack account balance you use elsewhere on the platform. When you buy, the order is funded from your available balance. When you sell, proceeds return to your available balance.

Funding a buy

You can fund stock and ETF buys with eligible USD or USDC. The order form shows your available balance on the Available row before you preview a trade.

On the buy side, you can also use quick-amount pills, i.e. 25%, 50%, 75%, and Max to fill in a portion of your available balance automatically. If your USD is in Backpack’s lending pool, eligible lent USD is included in your available balance and can be pulled back automatically when needed to fund a stock or ETF buy.

No automatic margin on stock buys

Backpack does not automatically borrow funds to complete a stock or ETF purchase, and there is no margin toggle on the stock order form. Stock and ETF buys use funds you already have available, including eligible USD, USDC, and eligible lent USD.

If you want to use borrowed USD, you need to borrow it manually through Backpack’s lend/borrow feature before placing the stock or ETF order. The usual borrowing rules apply to that loan, but the stock or ETF position itself is not traded on margin.

Stocks and ETFs cannot be used as collateral

Stock and ETF balances cannot be used as collateral for other positions right now. They do not count toward margin and cannot back a perp or other borrowed position. That also means a stock or ETF balance cannot be force-liquidated to cover another position.

Selling a position

When you sell a stock or ETF, proceeds return to your available Backpack balance. During public beta, selling within Backpack is the way to exit a stock or ETF position.

Stocks and ETFs cannot yet be transferred to an external wallet, broker, or platform.

Fees

Stock and ETF trading is commission-free. Backpack does not charge a separate commission or platform fee on stock and ETF trades.

At the Preview step, you’ll see the Estimated Price, Subtotal, and Total before you confirm. The previewed quote is the price you choose to accept.

Spreads, taxes, regulatory fees, third-party charges, or future fees may still apply.

Minimum order size

During regular U.S. market hours, you can trade fractional shares down to 0.01 share, in 0.01-share increments.

Outside regular hours  overnight, pre-market, and after-hours — the minimum is 1 whole share.

Every order also needs to be worth at least $1.

Why pricing changes outside regular hours

Backpack Securities is quote-based: when you preview an order, you see a live quote reflecting current market conditions. Outside regular hours there's less liquidity, so quotes are naturally wider, especially overnight. This isn't a Backpack fee; it reflects the state of the underlying market. For the tightest pricing, trade during regular hours, when liquidity is deepest.

Order minimums

When Minimum size Increments
Regular hours 0.01 share 0.01
Outside regular hours 1 whole share 1
All orders $1 value

Funding & settlement

  • Settlement currency: USD.
  • Funding source: your available USD balance. Lent USD is included automatically and pulled back when needed, so you can buy in one step.
  • No margin: stock purchases can't use auto-borrowed funds; borrow manually first if you need to.
  • Selling proceeds: return to your available USD balance instantly.

FAQs

What are Backpack's stock trading hours?

Four sessions in ET: Overnight (8:00pm–4:00am), Pre-market (4:00am–9:30am), Regular (9:30am–4:00pm), and After-hours (4:00pm–8:00pm), running Sunday 8:00pm through Friday 8:00pm.

Does Backpack charge stock trading fees?

No. There are no commissions or platform fees — the quoted price is the price you pay.

Why are prices wider at night?

Lower liquidity outside regular hours naturally widens spreads, especially overnight. That's market-driven, not a fee.

What's the minimum order?

$1, with fractional orders down to 0.01 share during regular hours; one whole share minimum outside regular hours.
