Buying and selling stocks on Backpack is super simple and takes about a minute to learn. Backpack uses a simple, quote-based model where you see a live price, confirm the trade, and your balance updates after the order fills. There's no order book, no maker/taker mechanics, and no slippage settings to manage.
When you buy a stock on Backpack, you hold a security entitlement under New York UCC Article 8, the same legal framework that governs traditional U.S. brokerages. It is a recognized legal property interest in the underlying share, held through regulated U.S. intermediaries.
Before you start make sure you have:
- A KYC-verified Backpack account (the same verification used for crypto)
- Access from a supported region (not available in the US, UK, UAE, Japan, or Backpack EU)
- Funding source: Stock and ETF orders can be funded with USD or USDC. Before you preview a trade, make sure your eligible USD/USDC balance is sufficient for the order total.
Step 1: Find a stock or ETF

Open the Stocks page and locate a security by:
- Searching a company name or ticker (for example, "Apple" or "AAPL")
- Browsing index cards and movers lists (most active, top gainers/losers, popular ETFs)
- Using the Screener to scroll the full list of supported U.S.-listed stocks and ETFs
Select any ticker to open its detail page.
Step 2: Choose Buy or Sell and enter quantity
Toggle between Buy and Sell. Enter your share quantity directly, or on the buy side use the quick pills i.e. 25%, 50%, 75%, and Max.

Note: Fractional shares are available only during regular U.S. market hours (9:30am–4:00pm ET, Monday–Friday). Outside those hours, you can trade whole shares only
If you enter a fractional quantity outside regular hours, the order form will let you know:
Note: Fractional shares are only available during market hours.
Step 3: Enable Trading (first trade only)
Before your very first order, you'll accept a one-time User Agreement. The order button reads Enable Trading select it, review the terms, check the confirmation box, and select Acknowledge. After that, the button becomes Preview for all future orders.

Step 4: Preview & review your quote
Click Preview to request a live quote. You'll briefly see "Routing for best execution…", then an order summary showing:

- Estimated Price
- Fee
- Total
Note: Quotes are short-lived, valid for only a few seconds. If a quote expires, Backpack refreshes it automatically so your pricing stays current.
Step 5: Confirm your order
Place the trade. You'll see one of three outcomes:
- Trade Successful: your balance updates immediately
- Order Pending: most fill within seconds
- Order Failed: usually a price move, timeout, or insufficient funds after settlement; simply retry
How selling works
To sell any stock or ETF you can follow the same steps, toggle to Sell, enter your quantity, preview the quote, and confirm. Proceeds return to your available USD balance instantly, ready to reinvest or withdraw.
Note: During public beta, selling back to USD or USDC is the only way to exit a stock or ETF position. Stocks can’t yet be transferred to an external wallet, broker, or platform.
