Backpack Securities lets eligible Backpack users buy and sell real U.S.-listed stocks and ETFs from the same account as their crypto, settled in USD. Holdings are real security entitlements under New York UCC Article 8, cleared and custodied by SEC-registered broker-dealers that are FINRA and SIPC members.
How does Backpack Securities work?
Backpack Securities operates across three connected layers: real ownership, tokenization, and unified capital. Together, they create a direct pathway between traditional securities ownership and blockchain-native tokenization, supporting both ownership of security entitlements and the on/off-ramping of stocks between traditional brokerage accounts and Solana wallets.
Real ownership
Backpack Securities begins with a traditional brokerage platform. When you buy a stock on Backpack, you own a real security entitlement under New York UCC Article 8, the same legal ownership structure used at firms like Charles Schwab, Fidelity, Vanguard, and Robinhood.
A security entitlement is a recognized legal property interest in the underlying stock, not an unsecured debt or contractual claim against Backpack. Two protections apply under this framework:
- 1:1 backing. Under UCC § 8-504, each customer security entitlement is backed 1:1 with securities held in the underlying U.S.-regulated brokerage and clearing chain.
- Asset segregation. Under UCC § 8-503, customer assets are segregated from Backpack's corporate assets and are not available to satisfy Backpack's creditor claims, including in a bankruptcy.
Stocks and ETFs trade 24/5 across U.S. market sessions, settle in USD, and support fractional shares from 0.01 of a share during regular market hours.
Tokenization
Backpack Securities combines real securities ownership with onchain distribution, enabling investors to seamlessly transition between traditional securities ownership and tokenized securities. Each tokenized security is redeemable 1:1 for the underlying real share through Backpack Securities.
With tokenized securities, investors can:
- Transfer tokenized securities 24/7 onchain
- Access assets through wallets and DeFi applications while maintaining a direct connection to ownership of the underlying security
- Convert between tokenized securities and traditional security entitlements through Backpack Securities deposits and withdrawals
- Transfer to and from external brokerage accounts directly from Backpack Securities
Tokenized securities launch on Solana through a partnership with Sunrise.
Unified capital
Traditional financial systems are built around silos. Stocks live in brokerage accounts. Crypto lives on exchanges. Each product comes with its own balance, login, and collateral system. The result is capital that's fragmented across platforms.
Backpack treats them as a single portfolio. Stocks, crypto, perpetual futures, and lending positions share the same account, the same collateral, and the same balance. A stock purchase can be funded by USD from lending. Crypto and stocks can collateralize the same perpetual position. No separate portal. No additional verification beyond existing Backpack KYC. No manual transfers between products.
Who can use Backpack Securities?
Backpack Securities is available to eligible users with a verified Backpack account in supported regions. No additional verification is required beyond existing Backpack KYC.
Not available in: United States, United Kingdom, United Arab Emirates, Japan, and Backpack EU.
